Dr Maurvi Amish Bhavsar

Dear Dr Patel and Dr Bhatt,
Hope you are doing well.

With my dream to pursue Residency in the United States, I had the dedication and motivation to achieve my goal. I started preparing for USMLE step exams in my internship and seek seniors for advice.Shivani was the first senior I approached and she gave me the right guidance and shared her story with me which inspired me more. We always a need a slight push from our mentors and seniors for soaring high to achieve our goals, my seniors including Shivani did just that. After completing my USMLE step exams, when I was seeking opportunities to attain clinical experience in the States, I approached SBCF, Dr Bhatt as they initiated their Recommendation for Clinical Observership Program. I submitted my credentials and required documentation and I was selected for the Observership. In the Covid era, where all the institutions had discontinued their international visitor rotation programs, I was fortunate enough to secure rotations with highly esteemed Dr Nilesh Patel, a cardiothoracic surgeon and Dr Meherwan Joshi, an interventional cardiologist in New Jersey; because of the recommendation of SBCF. SBCF opened the gates for my USA journey.

As I reached US, I contacted Dr Patel regarding the rotation. Dr Patel, being the most humble and kind person, welcomed me to the country and his practice with great enthusiasm. Being the Cardiothoracic surgery chief at St. Micheal’s Medical Center, Dr Patel has an ocean of knowledge and skills to learn from. I found myself very fortunate to be able to witness his work and practice. Dr Patel also helped me secure a rotation with Dr Joshi in the times of pandemic stress and always replied to my calls and messages as soon as possible. With that support, I gradually developed confidence of working and presenting myself well in a new environment.

My rotation with Dr Joshi at Trinitas Regional Medical Center was one of the best experiences in the States. Witnessing and interacting with a diverse population including Spanish speaking people with varied clinical presentations of cardiologic disorders, I learnt a lot about different pathologies as well as acquired skills of effective communication with patients. Observing Dr Joshi cater to patients with utmost care and dedication, I realized the role of a doctor in people’s and community’s well being. Working for 6 weeks at the clinic, I gradually took up more responsibility including recording vital signs and assisting the staff members in Ecg recording, noting down current medications and history of current complaints, reviewing past medical history and briefing Dr Joshi before he examined the patient. Although being busy, Dr Joshi would take time out to ask questions and discuss topics, motivating me to review literature daily and stay up-to-date with the latest guidelines. Not only did I learn and adapt to the US Healthcare but also developed deep interest for the field of cardiology. The staff members at the office were extremely supportive, helpful and friendly making the experience wholesome. Dr Joshi also provided me an opportunity to work with a resident on a Research Paper.

These experiences changed me professionally as well as personally. I believe that the attributes I acquired stay strong with me as building blocks towards becoming a resident and a good physician in the future. I will always look up to Dr Patel and Dr Joshi as they played a very important role in my transformation.

I am highly grateful to Dr Bhatt for providing me such an opportunity and being supportive in each and every step of my US Residency journey. I hope I am able to achieve my goal and make Dr Patel, Dr Joshi, Dr Bhatt and Shivani proud.

Sincerely,
Maurvi Bhavsar
