Finding rotations in Neurology has always been difficult given the scarce opportunities and limited physicians. But Dr Shivani Bhatt Charitable Foundation helped me with my USMLE journey by letting me be a part of an enlightening experience to learn from two great physicians and teachers: Dr Dipak Pandya and Dr Manish Viradia at Hunterdon Neurology, NJ.
Both of them are very caring and compassionate physicians who always go above and beyond for their patients and all of their patients always told me during my rotation that I'm very lucky to be shadowing both of them. I saw a variety of patients, including movement disorder patients with Parkinson's, tremors, various types of seizure disorder patients, patients with dementia, neuropathies, migraines and witnessed many Botox procedures and EMGs. This was very fascinating for me as I got to learn about the differential diagnosis of each of the cases, their various presentations, witness how various treatment options work for different patients and what difference they make in them - physically and mentally. It was motivating to watch patients leaving with a smile after a long course of turmoil and discouragement.
Dr.Pandya always took out time to teach me aspects of neurology, patient care and also lessons of life. He always encouraged me to ask questions, which given his busy schedule, I really appreciated. He taught me and his patients how holistic approaches go a long way rather than just prescribing medications. He made me realize that there is much more to neurology than just knowledge and treatment.
One motto of his which I look forward to inculcating in my life as a physician is : 'Always be patient, listen to everyone, be cheerful and treat patients like your own family.'
Outside the clinic, both of the physicians took good care of me and made me feel at home. The staff was really helpful too and everyone looked out for each other, which made me realize how important a good work environment is in running a successful practice.
I would like to thank and commend Dr Hemant Bhatt and his foundation for helping IMGs like me be a part of such meaningful clinical and teaching experiences in the US. It taught me not just Neurology, but also how to be a good physician and be there for my patients. I look forward to my future as a physician in the US and hope I can be of any help for this foundation's noble cause.
